    The Miner from the Meißner

The miner in the habitus of that time, with a torch, a so-called oil frog, in his right hand and a pick on his left shoulder, wearily leaves the tunnel after his shift.

This monument was erected in 2003
to commemorate 400 years of lignite mining on the Meißner.

But especially in memory of the miners who remained in the mine and in remembrance of 10 generations of people who once lived and worked in the Schwalbental mine.

    The monument weighs 1.2 tons.
It consists of numerous oak blocks glued together.
Based on a design by Harry Träger and Marco Lenarduzzi, it was painstakingly created in the creative workshop of the Witzenhausen Adult Education Center by wood sculptor Viktor Donhauser and his son Ilja.

The generous support of the Werra-Meißner Savings Bank Foundation made the construction of this artistic monument possible.

The relief commemorates the mining tradition at the Meißner. The coal mined here was used for salt production in Bad Sooden-Allendorf.

A beautiful photo opportunity, right next to the Schwalbenthal viewing point parking lot. The monument commemorates the mining industry on the Meißner and the miners who lost their lives in the process.
