The natural monument made of basalt rock, which is supervised by the Werra Valley Association, is always worth a visit. The narrow, well-kept paths and the stones themselves put me in a different, earlier world every time I stay.

From the Schwalbental you can hike to the “Seesteinen” (a so-called block sea). An interesting place. However, the stones are very slippery. From bottom to top these are still easier to walk on than opposite.

The access to the sea stones requires a safe step from above.
The old basalt steps can be tricky, especially when it is wet and covered with leaves.

This small area used to have the character of an amusement park. Today, however, it is still romantic to walk along the small paths and stairs between the rocks.

A nice way, but beware of wet or snow: the road is quite slippery!

A very romantic and poetic place to think and pause. The climb afterwards is strenuous and requires a lot of surefootedness, only recommended to a limited extent in winter.

Good sure-footedness and safe footwear are important, but those who dare can discover wonderful things and beautiful spots for beautiful nature pictures.

An eye-catcher for everyone, large, powerful basalt stones positioned by human hands.

A large forest park that invites you to linger. Here you should plan a rest and look at everything in peace.

At the top of the stairs it's easy to miss the right turn. Therefore keep a little left (if you come from below). Saves a detour over scree;)

Three days ago I explored this beautiful area. When it snows, the landscape here turns into a small winter wonderland. The sea stones can be reached with a running time of less than 2 hours (without a break) and thus the distance is not too long for the winter. I recorded the hike in a video on YouTube. Have a look if you are not sure yet or only know the hike from summer. 🙂
