From 1560 to 1929 lignite was mined at the Hohen Meißner. The Carlsstollen is a testimony of that time. Information boards explain more about the mining and the different types of rock.

The Carlsstollen was originally built in 1630 as a weather tunnel with shaft and chimney so that the miners in the new Erbstollen 20m below could be supplied with sufficient fresh air. But here, too, good seam lots with the coveted black coal were found and mined until 1836. The tunnel was about 200m long.
