In the Middle Ages, today's Schiller Square (Piața Friedrich Schiller) was known as Meadow Square (Piața Pajisti). In 1659, a mill and an artesian well were built here. Both were in operation until 1854. To facilitate access from Piața Pajisti to Piața Mare, a passage was built under a house. This passage between the two markets was widened in 1775. In 1905, several cultural events were organized in Sibiu in honor of the great German writer Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death. In 1909, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Schiller's birth, the city council renamed Pajisti Square to Schiller Square, after the poet's name.
