Wirsberg was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 13th century. The castle ruin Wirsberg rises on a rock massif in the center of Wirsberg. The place gave its name to the family of Wirsberg. The Rabensteiner von Wirsberg owned several castle estates. The former senior office of the Prussian principality of Bayreuth, which had been in Prussia since 1792, fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipality of Wirsberg with the district Sessenreuth was created with the municipal edict of 1818.
