The first Staufer stele was inaugurated on December 13, 2000, the 750th anniversary of the death of the last Staufer emperor, Frederick II, in the ruins of Castel Fiorentino in Italy. Steles followed in Germany, France, Austria, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The inscriptions on the steles were designed by the Staufer Friends Committee between 2002 and 2018.
