This forest is home to the source of the Meersbeek, which forms the border between Hoelbeek and Waltwilder. It is this watercourse that filled the wide moats of the Jonckholt fortress with water in the Middle Ages. The stream was drained but was reopened so that the water can fully nourish nature in the valley again. Past the castle ruins, the Meersbeek flows into the Krombeek, which, together with other streams, forms the Munsterbeek and flows further into the Demer. The Meersbeek Valley forms a green oasis in an agricultural area and connects to Domain Groenendaal. In this young forest, planted in the 1990s, you can enjoy beautiful blooms such as the slender primrose and the pentecostal flower. Furthermore, hares, deer, hawks and buzzards may occasionally cross your path. Connoisseurs will discover the beautiful songs of the nightingale and the golden oriole among the birdsong.
