The Hesselsberg is an 87 m high hill, one of the foothills of the Kempen low plateau. On top of the hill there is a 6 meter high statue of Mary. In 1946, the KSA of Limburg planned to build a 'Mary Castle' on Hesselsberg: an infrastructure for young people with playgrounds. In anticipation of this, an image has already been placed. However, St. Mary's Castle was never built and four years later the plaster statue fell from its pedestal during a storm and was shattered. The people of Zutendaal provided a new statue, made of bims stone, which was inaugurated in 1954. Once a year, at the beginning of October, a 'candle procession' moves from the church to this place.
