In 1964 Jeroen Brouwers made his debut with the collection of short stories Het knife op de keel. He received the Vijverberg Prize for his subsequent novel, Joris Ockeloen and the Wait (1967). He became known to the general public with Sunken Red (1981), in which he tells the story of his mother and himself in a Japanese camp during World War II.
