The tannery mill was first mentioned in documents in 1446. Over the years, many millers worked at this location on the Mühlbach in the center of Bayreuth. The mill itself was used as a grain mill, cutting mill, paper mill or as a tannery mill (tannery was a substance made from bark for tanning leather). The mill burned down several times, was rebuilt or replaced by other buildings. The hotel-restaurant "Lohmühle" was built in the old Franconian style on the foundations of the ruins of the last mill. It opened in 1980.

The tannery mill was first mentioned in the town register in 1446. Over the course of history, it changed hands frequently, was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
The name "tannery mill" comes from its function. Tannery was ground from tree bark here, which was used to tan animal hides.
Although the name "tannery mill" remained for centuries, it was a mill complex.

A tannery mill is used to crush the vegetable tanning agents required for tanning. Spruce and oak bark from tannery forests are mainly ground into tannery. This contains a lot of tannic acid and is therefore suitable for tanning leather. The material was originally also used to preserve fishing nets, ropes and sails. Tannery has been an important trading commodity since the Middle Ages and was subject to staple rights.

After the ground material has been crushed, it is ground in the actual mill. Several principles are used here: either as a tannery mill (a stamping mill, also called a tannery tamper or tannery pounder), or the coffee mill principle (bell mills), disintegrators or horizontal millstones, the use of which was sometimes prohibited in some areas.
