Eichhof Castle is located three kilometers south of Bad Hersfeld. The magnificent Luther Room commemorates Martin Luther's brief visit to the castle. On the way from the Reichstag in Worms to the Wartburg, he was received at the Eichhof by Abbot Crato before he preached in the monastery ruins on the morning of May 1st.
Today the Luther Room is a popular wedding venue. In summer, the inner courtyard of Eichhof Castle becomes the backdrop for theater performances as part of the Bad Hersfeld Festival.

Eichhof Palace was built in 1328 as the seat of the abbots of the Hersfeld Imperial Abbey outside the town of Hersfeld. The ongoing conflict with the citizens, who were trying to shake off the secular rule of the abbots, prompted the construction of this stronghold, retreat and summer residence. The buildings that can still be seen today, mainly in the Renaissance style, date back mainly to the 16th century. After the Hersfeld prince abbey was transferred to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel (1606, finally in 1648), the castle was primarily used as a landgrave's domain and was used for administrative and agricultural purposes.
The Luther room commemorates the most famous visitor. On April 30, 1521, Martin Luther was a guest of Abbot Crato (born Kraft Myle) on his journey from the Diet of Worms to the Wartburg.
