In the Middle Ages, the old town of Bad Hersfeld was protected by at least one stone wall and a ditch in front of it. Only a few of the former 12 towers have survived. This shell tower can still be seen as a fragment. It had a special feature, it was open at the back. Intruders who had gotten over the wall found no cover in such a defensive tower. Adjacent to the tower on the right is the last remnant of the former battlements. The north school ponds in front of it in the city park are the remnants of the former city moat.
