After a major fire in 1038, the new building began and the collegiate church was built. In 1761, when the French army withdrew, burned down the supplies they had piled up in the collegiate church. One of the largest sacred halls in Germany went up in flames and was almost completely destroyed.

The Katharinenturm only houses one bell today: the Lullus bell. As the inscription shows, it dates from 1038 and is Germany's oldest cast bell.

Ruins of the collegiate church of the former abbey Hersfeld: the building dates back to a hermitage dating back to 736 and was expanded in the following years to Benedictine monastery and monastery church - in the Seven Years' War (1761), it was largely destroyed.
