During World War II, the underground Schwalbe V armaments facility was built from 1944 onwards by 120 foreign forced laborers, 500 prisoners of war and military internees, and 1,200 to 1,500 inmates of the Buchenwald concentration camp. At the Schwalbe V construction site alone, 314 people died under inhumane conditions. A memorial stone erected in 1947 on the slope of Baderberg commemorates the victims of fascism. The majority of the prisoners were forced on a death march, which many did not survive. Researchers temporarily suspected that the tunnels contained the lost Amber Room.
