Built in the 13th century as a residential tower, Castle Planta fell into the possession of the eponymous Swiss family around 1620 and was gradually expanded. Since 1936, it has been the property of barons Senfft von Pilsach.

hToday's Planta Castle in Merano Maia Alta was originally a residential tower that was only expanded to its present form over the course of the centuries. In 1284, Ulricht von Greifen and his wife moved into the so-called Haslach Tower. The then Greifen Castle remained in the family until the von Greifen family died out in the 15th century. From then on, the castle fell into different hands, including the possession of the Völs-Colonna. Corner towers were added.
With the owner Planta, the name Castle Planta also became commonplace and although the property changed hands again in the 18th century, the name is still used today. In 1936, Planta Castle was acquired by the Barons Senfft von Pilsach and has been exceptionally well maintained ever since.
