The Nikolaitor is the only surviving one of the former five city gates in Eisenach, Thuringia. It was built around 1170 at about the same time as the neighboring Nikolaikirche and is therefore the oldest city gate in Thuringia. In the Middle Ages, the Via Regia trade route from Frankfurt am Main to Kraków passed through Eisenach. At the exit from Karlsplatz to Bahnhofstrasse, you left the city and headed east through the Nikolaitor. The city gate was closed every evening until 1832.

The Romanesque Nikolaitor is the only one of the five city gates that has been preserved. The gate was closed every evening until 1832. This way you could leave the city to the east.
