A perfect place to relax in summer. In winter, on the other hand, the wind whistles through everyone's clothes (mulled wine helps, however). 😄

When you arrive at the Rennsteig, the Hirschstein with the high forest grotto is not far.
Johann Gottlieb Dietrich (1765–1850) was court gardener at Wilhelmstal Palace. He worked on the western slope of the Hirschstein around 1811 and opened up the high forest grotto there through a walkway with a bridge and stairs.

From the Hirschstein (463.3 m), which is a little off the Rennsteig, you have a wonderful view of Wilhelmsthal Castle and the near and far surroundings of the western Thuringian Forest and the Rhön.
From here, a path leads down to the Hochwald grotto and Wilhelmsthal Castle.
A nice rest area invites you to linger.
