Under Napoleon, the North Channel has been planned as a navigable waterway between the Rhine and the Meuse as the Grand Canal du Nord. From 1809 to 1810 was built. The original 20 meters wide planned channel remained unfinished. Along the waterway you can see French buildings such as the Kölner Straße canal keeper's house near the Hammfelddamm, or the Epankoir waterworks on the corner of Selikumer Straße / Nordkanalallee or "Empellement" in Selikumer Park.
