In 1456, the citizens of Neuss received permission to divert water from the Erft to irrigate the city moat and probably also to counteract the increasing silting up of the old branch of the Rhine on the east side of the city. The new watercourse, which received the name "neue Erft" or "Obererft", was branched off by a weir at Haus Selikum from the Erft, which flowed into the Rhine at Grimmlinhausen.
