Not only does the Belfort tower over Sluis, but at the southern end of Nieuwvlietstraat, the "De Brak" grain mill also overlooks the city from a hilltop. Built in 1739 as a fortified mill on a hill, the mill owes its name to the French hunting dog breed "Braque," which holds its nose to the wind while hunting. This cap windmill can rotate its upper part—the cap with its wings—in the desired wind direction for optimal performance.
