The Triplets of Retranchement (Border Post 364)

Without knowing it, you are walking here on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. During your passage, you will become acquainted with ‘De Drieling van Retranchement’. These are three border posts with the same number: 364. The middle one of the three indicates the border. The village is located on the Zwin and at the time the posts were placed, water still flowed through here. That is why it was difficult to determine where exactly the border was. Three posts were placed.

The earthen walls around Retranchement were built in 1607, during the 80 years war (1568-1648), to protect the Zwin canal against the Spanish. The old ramparts have now been conquered by nature and constitute a lovely destination for a walk.

Searching for borderposts could be a lovely pastime along the Dutch-Belgian border line.
