The East Gate was built between 1425 and 1432. The Spaniards attacked the city here in 1606, but were unsuccessful. They suffered an ignominious defeat with heavy casualties. What you can still see here is part of an originally much larger gate.

Hiking

The Oostpoort was built between 1424 and 1432 by the master mason Joris Lietac. The gate was completely restored in 2010-2011. During the restoration work an (old and harmless) cannonball was found. This has been built into the Oostpoort as a permanent memento.
