Observation Platform at Het Zwin

You will find this beautiful observation platform in the far corner of the Zwin, near Retranchement. It is just a few steps from the parking lot at the entrance to the village and is located on your left when you go up the first stairs to the new dike. It can be slippery on the stairs that take you to the round platform. It is an ideal start and end to a walk (after that short walk from the parking lot just outside Retranchement). Most beautiful when the tide is high, but also nice at low tide and between the tides. An information board, lots of benches, watch life on the wet sand and water or just dream away in the salty sea air a few kilometers from the channel where the seawater flows into the Zwin. Just before (or after, depending on where you come) there is also an interesting information board with some benches along the cycle path.

Twice a day, at high tide, large amounts of seawater pour into the area and flood the country. The salty North Sea water ensures natural conditions that are unique in Europe and creates an original biotope of silt and salt marshes. The "Zwin" is therefore the ideal habitat for worms, snails, mussels and other creatures, which in turn are the basis of life for a wide variety of birds.
