If you (man😉) want to get away from shopping. Would that be a good opportunity to look at a historical part of Sluis? Simply gigantic which defense system has already built.

The ramparts, originally defensive walls, of Sluis have been there for more than 600 years. At that time, Sluis was a thriving trading town due to its location on the Zwin, then still an important waterway. The current ramparts were built later, during the Eighty Years' War. Sluis was a fortress of the States and was thus protected against the Spaniards.

Now the ramparts, the canals and the adjacent grassland with shrubs are a beautiful nature reserve. It is ideally suited here for the rare tree frog. There are places where plants such as worsted grass, spotted alfalfa, cat thorn and vervain grow. Birds such as the reed warbler, garden warbler and treecreeper and sometimes long-eared owl and little owl nest in the reeds and shrubbery along the canals.

You can walk and cycle over a large part of the Red Light District.

From the fortress wall built in the 15th century, there are always nice views of Sluis and the surrounding countryside.
