The fact that Sluis is a fortified town is mainly evidenced by the town walls and the old town gates.
The city walls around Sluis have a cultural-historical value and are a beautiful piece of nature for hikers and cyclists.

Fortifications were built as early as the 14th century to protect the then important trading city. The Spanish recaptured the city in 1587, but in 1604 the city was taken by Prince Maurits' troops. Most of the city walls date from this period.

It's a nice walk on the city walls with their canals and gates.

Standing high atop the Belfry tower, you can discover just how much nature and water there is in Sluis. We definitely recommend a visit to the five-kilometer-long Shell Paths, which run along the more than 600-year-old city wall. You can walk or cycle along them.

On the way, you will pass at least one of Sluis's four old city gates: Oostpoort, Westpoort, Waterpoort, and Zuidpoort. Each gate has its own story. The East Gate was once the most beautiful city gate. Today, only a part of it remains. The most famous gate is the West Gate. It is also known as the Stone Bear and the Gate of Bruges. The gate owes its name to the fact that it was destroyed by invaders from Bruges in 1437. This gate is located on the famous Damse Vaart canal. The rustling of leaves in the trees on both sides of the water, the wide open spaces, and the tranquility make this 15-kilometer-long canal a more than pleasant walk or bike ride. Anglers like to set up their parasol or tent and then lose track of time, enjoying the surroundings. Those who complete their walk along the ramparts will come across the third gate, the Waterpoort (Water Gate). The South Gate, the fourth and final gate, is the entrance to Sluis when approaching from Aardenburg. You can see the gate at first glance on the right. But the long mill sails of Molen De Brak demand attention from the corner of your left eye. You can buy the flour milled in this mill. And don't miss the homemade apple pie.
