Come and discover the past of a turbulent battle and time for yourself.

Retranchement is now mainly an agricultural community. Two seventeenth-century monuments also deserve to be mentioned: a post mill and a hall church. The ramparts and moats are well preserved and now provide a home to rare plants and animals. A walking path now runs over a large part of the ramparts. Don't forget to visit Fort Nassau with its lookout point.

Retranchement is a village in the municipality of Sluis, between the Belgian Knokke and the Dutch Cadzand. The name comes from the French word for fortification.

Retranchement is a village in the municipality of Sluis in Zeeuws Vlaanderen in the Netherlands. It lies between the Belgian town of Knokke and the Dutch village of Cadzand. In 2014 Retranchement had 360 inhabitants.

Retranchement - the French word for entrenchment - was founded in 1604 by Prince Maurits (Moritz of Orange) after his capture of the town of Sluis, at the mouth of the Zwin estuary - the former connection between the North Sea and the now Belgian city of Bruges - against Spanish forces to back up. Remains of the fortifications Oranje and Nassau are still visible
