The “Westpoort”, the western city gate of medieval Sluis, was built between 1444 and 1450. The mighty city gate secured access to the city from the west and was the opening between two fortification walls with a moat in front of it and several star-shaped ramparts. Even today, when walking along the ramparts along the ruins of the city gate, also known as the “Stone Bear”, you can see the mighty fortress of Sluis, which secured the mouth of the Zwin and access to the important trading cities of Bruges and Ghent.
