The church of Mariekerke is one of my favorite places to relax. It is not only very picturesque and authentic, but also incredibly quiet. A place like you will find very few in Flanders.

The Church of Our Lady is located on the eastern Scheldt dike and therefore has a strikingly eccentric location in the old fishing village of Mariekerke. The first church dated from the 13th century. During the reconquest of the southern Netherlands by the Spanish, the church burned down. It was rebuilt by Jeanne L'Escuyer, widow of Pedro Coloma, lord of Bornem.

The Church of Our Lady is located in a picturesque location on the Scheldedijk. A place of worship had already been mentioned since the 13th century. The church was regularly destroyed by fire over the centuries. The last time it was destroyed was during World War I.
The church was rebuilt in 1925. Various movements can be recognized in the architectural style. The tower is partly Romanesque and partly Baroque. Other parts of the church are neo-Gothic.
The Church of Our Lady is also the setting for the passion play 'Christ on the Scheldt'.
Did you know: In the Romanesque architectural style period, church towers generally had a dual function. In addition to being a religious symbol, they also served as a shelter and defense for the villagers. This also explains the construction of the Church of Our Lady in a strategic location right on the Scheldt in Mariekerke.
