The Augsburg city fortifications were built in Roman times and in the Middle Ages they were supplemented by further walls with towers and moats. In the middle of the 19th century, the defortification of Augsburg began and with it the demolition of many of the fortifications. Five city gates, four bastions and long sections of the city wall have survived to the present day.
