Runkel has one of the most impressive and largest castle ruins in Hesse. For generations, the Lords of Runkel, in addition to collecting bridge tolls, were primarily concerned with family disputes and the occasional expansion of their castle. Runkel was the center of the Upper County of Wied and therefore a small princely residence.

Runkel Castle View – A Journey Back in Time to the Middle Ages

The view of the majestic Runkel Castle, which rises above the Lahn Valley, is an impressive example of medieval architecture. First mentioned in 1159, the castle served the Lords of Runkel to secure the Lahn Bridge and control the trade route. Over the centuries, it was the scene of numerous disputes, including family disputes that led to the construction of Schadeck Castle opposite. Despite destruction, particularly during the Thirty Years' War, the castle survived and was partially rebuilt. Today, it is owned by the Metfried family, Prince of Wied.

The vantage point offers a picturesque view of the castle, the historic 15th-century Lahn Bridge, and the surrounding old town with its half-timbered houses. A place that uniquely combines history and nature and invites you to linger.

Runkel is a highlight for any bike tour.
The beautiful old bridge over the Lahn River, Runkel Castle, the Lahn Island, and, from what I hear, one of the best ice cream parlors in the area, right below the castle.
All right here in this one spot.
