The medieval Runkel Castle, first mentioned in 1159, still defines Runkel's townscape today.

The mighty, fortified towers of Runkel Castle rise suddenly and unexpectedly on rigid, vertically sloping rocks in the middle of the lovely Lahn Valley. Still an example of an early medieval defensive structure today, it appears impregnable to the observer from the Lahn side.

The following can be visited: castle ruins with a tower ascent, historical rooms, old paintings, old furniture, weapons and equipment, vaults with a large wine press (Runkeler Rote was pressed here centuries ago), torture chamber, etc.
