The Rotbroek was always a floodplain with thick layers of peat until desiccation hit. There is still seepage and slope peat and efforts are being made to reduce desiccation. Rotbroek, along with Gorenbroek and Sint-Jansberg, forms part of the larger Borchbeemden. This open landscape with its wet water features is a paradise for meadow and marsh birds.
