The lower reaches of the Zwarte Beek flow southwest from Meldert, merging past Zelem into the Demer valley. It only joins the Demer near Diest. Here, the stream meanders between increasingly higher, undulating hills, occasionally shrinking to a narrow ribbon of hay and meadows, then expanding again into a wider zone, depending on the space allowed by the hills, which have a substratum of iron sandstone.

The Diestian sandstone hills lie here as extensions of the Hageland region. They are the remnants of an original Tertiary massif, preserved by a protective layer.
