Webbekom, a sub-municipality of Diest, belonged to the abbey of Sint-Truiden at an early stage, together with Zelem, Schaffen, Linkhout, Donk and Halen. The parish of Webbekom was founded around 800, and also included the "kapellanie" Assent until the end of the 18th century. The village was destroyed in 1507 during the Guelders Wars, the church also partially. During the unrest of the 16th century and especially in 1578, the church was again ravaged. In 1606 it was reconsecrated. North-east of the village centre lies the nature reserve Webbekoms Broek. It is a large nature reserve where wetlands and pools are omnipresent and you will find many water birds. There is still a lot of nature and water works being done with, among other things, additional wetlands. The area is easily accessible via Diest, where you will also find a visitors centre, but of course you can also enter here. At this location you will find an information board with the various routes and the nature reserve itself. Provide sturdy footwear in or after wetter weather if you want to walk further than the cobblestone path that you will find here.
