The church of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux in Strasbourg, which has been a listed building since 1981, has the peculiarity that it is dedicated to Catholic worship on the one hand and to Protestant worship on the other. Originally built in the 14th century in an elegant Gothic style, it was expanded in the 19th century to comfortably accommodate the influx of worshipers.

However, the church of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux, which is one of the oldest buildings in the Alsatian city, has undergone many changes, in particular the foundations of an ancient Romanesque cloister.

Exterior made with a mix of red bricks and Vosges sandstone, it presents medieval-inspired scenes on its façade and features hybrid architecture with a neo-Gothic influence. Inside, visitors can discover a variety of classified works, such as the Altar of the Blessed Sacrament with its neo-Gothic altarpiece with scenes from the Life of the Virgin, paintings of the Passion of Christ in the choir or the quadriptych from the Life of Saint Peter.

For many historians, the church is the first Christian cathedral in Strasbourg. It was first mentioned in documents in 1130. Remains of walls from Roman and Merovingian times were discovered in the south of the sacred building.

Built along one of the city's most important Roman routes, the Protestant part - once the nave of the original church - still houses some medieval wall paintings and gravestones. The authenticity of the relics of Amandus of Strasbourg kept here is controversial.

The Gothic construction that dominates today in the Protestant part was built in 1382. What was remarkable was the flamboyant choir in the Catholic part from 1455 by Jodokus Dotzinger (d. 1472), who made a name for himself as a cathedral builder.

The free imperial city of Strasbourg played an important role in the Reformation. In 1529 all churches, including the cathedral and Alt-Sankt-Peter, became Protestant. After Strasbourg became French under Louis XIV in 1681, Catholicism, which dominated France, gained importance. A compromise was sought in the use of the sacred buildings: in the case of Alt-Sankt-Peter, this consisted of both denominations sharing the church. The choir (Catholic part) was separated from the nave (Protestant area) by a 1.50 m thick wall.

One of the first highlights when walking from the main train station to the old town. It's hardly comparable to the large cathedral, of course, but it's certainly a very beautiful old church.
