The Altmarkt was probably laid out according to plan around 1200. Over the past centuries, the square's shape and development have changed several times. The Altmarkt was redesigned between 2000 and 2003.
The town hall was built on its current site in 1840 as a neoclassical building. Several renovations were carried out in the following years, and an extension was added in 1927/28.
