The connection was built in 1860-62 by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company to open up the industrial areas in the Ruhr region from Witten. With the Ruhr crossing, the line reached Duisburg, where a station belonging to the competing Cologne-Minden Railway Company had existed since 1846.
