The viewing platform on the roof offers visitors a very nice all-round view of the Ruhr Metropolis. The 117 m high landmark of the city of Oberhausen was put into operation in 1929 as a disk gas holder (a waste product from the surrounding blast furnaces of the Gutehoffnungshütte, the top gas, was temporarily stored here in order to then be burned again in the rolling mills). It has been Europe's highest exhibition hall since 1994. Particularly impressive also the photo exhibitions taking place inside when we were there with the theme : THE FRAGILE PARADISE, a really worthwhile destination.

The Oberhausen Gasometer is an industrial monument in Oberhausen and the highest exhibition and event hall in Europe. It is one of the panoramas and landmarks as well as the anchor points of the Route of Industrial Heritage. It is also part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), which connects milestones in industrial history in Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg and Germany. The gasometer is located in the new centre of Oberhausen directly on the Rhine-Herne Canal. With a storage volume of 347,000 m³, a height of 117 metres and a diameter of almost 68 metres, it was Europe's largest disc gas tank in operation until 1988.[1] It is a reminder of the heavy industry that shaped the Ruhr area for more than a century. Today it provides the setting for a wide variety of cultural events.

To date, 17 exhibitions have attracted the interest of more than eight million visitors. As the highest exhibition hall in Europe, the gasometer is an inspiration.
