The Graf Recke Church is still quite young, it dates from 1909. The massive exterior is almost reminiscent of a fortified castle. It is named after Adelberdt Graf von der Recke-Volmerstein (1791-1878), who took in orphans in his parents' castle Overdyck near Bochum from 1816 and founded the "Society of Humanitarian Friends for the Rescue and Education of Abandoned Orphans and Crime Children". At the beginning of the 20th century, the "Graf-Recke-Foundation" moved to Wittlaer. The church was a place of worship for the employees, children and young people who lived in the surrounding homes Reckestift, Neu-Düsselthal (three-wing house) and in the Lindenhof.
