It is the ancient human dream of flying, says the self-confessed day and night dreamer Walter Schembs, which inspired him to create his new sculpture. Source: wormser-zeitung.de // More information at worms-erleben.de

This work of art is part of the Abenheim Sculpture Trail, a project of the local local history association. It was opened in 2009, is around 4 km long and offers a wide panoramic view from the Odenwald across the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest, and Worms Cathedral can also be seen in the distance.

The starting point is the approximately four-meter-long high stands that were previously used to ward off starlings. The guard climbed up them with a ladder and, once at the top, used a blank-firing pistol to chase away the flocks of starlings in the autumn. This form of starling defence is long gone, as electronic defence has been used for decades. A few years ago, Abenheim came up with the idea of making these high stands available to artists.

Those who want to get too close to the sun crash. An impressive sculpture that fits harmoniously into nature.

IKARUS has a fantastic view of the Wonnegau with the wind turbines in the background

With arms outstretched horizontally and a gaze directed towards the sky, "Icarus" appears to be about to take off. An illusion is created that continues in the viewer's mind. However, the depiction of the arms can also be reminiscent of the wings of an angel and thus alludes to Archangel Michael, to whom the nearby St. Michael's Chapel is dedicated.

The overall appearance of the "Icarus" together with the stele only gives an idea of the sculpture from afar and appears like a cross. Here, too, another reference to religiosity opens up: a crossroads of our time.

The outer structure of the "Ikarus" and many other sculptures by Walter Schembs suggest a wooden sculpture. In fact, he first worked and carved the "Icarus" roughly in wood with a saw. Only later was the figure cast in bronze.

Walter Schembs is represented in numerous well-known galleries in Germany and takes part in national and international art fairs. His art is widespread in public spaces. The sculptor who lives in Worms-Herrnsheim is one of the most successful artists in our region and feels closely connected to Abenheim and especially the sculpture trail. His brother Eckhart Schembs is also represented here with the "Wonnefrau".

One of the many sculptures that you can discover on the way - there is a small bar in these vineyards even in summer when the weather is nice, which makes it easier to continue walking
