Alsheim Sunken Lanes

The ravines are a classic structural feature of the Rhine-Hessian landscape. They were created through centuries of agricultural use. The heavy carts dug deep grooves in the loosened soil and erosion from the water during heavy rain eroded the soil. If the grooves got too deep, they had to be smoothed out again. The path dug itself deeper and deeper and is partially limited by loose walls more than three meters high.
