In 1805, the Heyl family acquired the former prince-bishop's garden north of the cathedral. The area is bordered on the west side by the remains of the medieval city wall. The traditional Worms Bishop's Court stood here in place of the original royal palace, which was rebuilt with the involvement of Balthasar Neumann between 1719 and 1725 as an elongated building with side wings, the central projection of which faced towards the palace square. The new prince-bishop's residence was destroyed again in 1794.
The representative building of the Heylshof was created between 1881 and 1884 by the Swiss architect Alfred Friedrich Bluntschli, who was a student of Semper, in the neo-baroque style and served as a palace for Cornelius Wilhelm Heyl, his wife Sophie von Heyl zu Herrnsheim (née Stein) and their children after the building previously used as a residential building, the Heyls-Schlößchen, had become too small. Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl and his wife, Baroness Sophie von Heyl, bequeathed the building and the associated garden to the city of Worms. The building was partially destroyed in an air raid in the spring of 1945 and rebuilt as a single storey with a hipped roof. Since 1961 it has been open to the public again as the "Kunsthaus Stiftung Heylshof".
