This work of art was cut from French stone during school year 1958-59 and afterwards donated to the City of Eeklo. The original title was 'Maria meets her cousin Elisabeth'. It is one of the only two sculptures the artist has ever cut down. It was once thrown from its pedestal by strangers and was then restored by Steven Vynck, a ceramics artist from Beke.

Dirk Verstraete was born in Bruges on October 18, 1937. He studied graphics and sculpture at the Hoger Instituut Sint-Lucas in Ghent. From 1962 to 1997 he taught (mainly painting) at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Eeklo. He exhibited in various cafes, churches, chapels and obscure galleries. As a member of the Art Circle, he was involved in the magazine Artibus and the exhibitions (with nicknamed catalog) 'Art in Eekloos possession', 'Jules Lagae and contemporaries' and 'A century of nudes in Belgian sculpture'. He was also a longtime contributor to the weekly magazine 'De Eeclonaar' with the weekly 'Bezige Annex' and TV cartoons. He wrote seven plays that were performed with some success by the theater society De Kultuurdaad. He is also a designer and producer of various ceramic facing bricks, book covers, posters and other occasional printed matter.
