The Grote Kop was made in honor of writer Jan Frans Willems, also a member of the Flemish movement in the 19th century. Willems had little sympathy for the new Belgium and would have preferred that Flanders and the Netherlands remained one entity. By maintaining these sympathies, he was banished to Eeklo. He lived in this city for eight years and was not always happy about it. The Eeklo time was a period of study for Jan Frans Willems. Forced into the role of chamberlain, he had a lot of time here to consider the paths the Flemish Movement should take in the young Belgian kingdom. He was later rehabilitated and moved to Ghent. He continued to work on cultural unity with the Netherlands. For example, he was decisive in the so-called spelling war, which made the language unity of Flanders and the Netherlands a fact. The new spelling, which came into force in 1844, therefore bears his name: 'Willems-spelling'. In 1851, a number of liberal-liberal Flemish supporters founded the Willemsfonds named after him in Ghent. Together with the (socialist) Vermeylenfonds and the (catholic) Davidsfonds, it played an important role in the Flemish Movement

De Grote Kop is not a spitting image of Jan Frans Willems. However, the underlying symbolism does refer to him. Artist Maen Florin created a monumental head of an introverted youth, as a symbol of the source of all creativity.

Maen Florin (° 1954) is a sculptor who prefers classical methods. She models, molds and casts her sculptures in rubber, epoxy and polyurethane. Then each image is edited individually. Maen often plays on the borderline between humor and tragedy, between joy and sadness, between robust and fragile. This creates works of art with a fairytale yet disturbing character.
