On January 8, 2016, two Islamic militants armed with a melee weapon and a flare stormed the Bella Vista Hotel by sea, stabbing two European tourists. One of the attackers was killed by police while trying to take a woman hostage. The other attacker was injured and sentenced to life imprisonment.
