The Rückert fountain was erected in honor of Friedrich Rückert in the castle garden in place of a bird bath and unveiled in 1904 on the day of the university's foundation. The Art Nouveau fountain is based on a design by the architect and artist Theodor Fischer and was executed by the Erlangen sculptor Johann Baptist Mantel.
