The Rückert fountain was erected in honor of Friedrich Rückert in the castle garden in place of a bird bath and unveiled in 1904 on the day of the university's foundation. The Art Nouveau fountain is based on a design by the architect and artist Theodor Fischer and was executed by the Erlangen sculptor Johann Baptist Mantel. A saying from Rückert's didactic poem "The Wisdom of the Brahman" is quoted on the back wall of the fountain.

In 1904, the sculptor Johann Baptist Mantel created the Rückert fountain on the site of the Vögelbrünnlein, based on a design by Theodor Fischer. The fountain, designed in a squat Art Nouveau style, is dedicated to the poet Friedrich Rückert, who worked as a professor of oriental languages at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen between 1826 and 1841. During this time he wrote one of his most successful works, The Wisdom of the Brahman, from which a verse was incorporated into the fountain as an inscription:
