On Frauenplan, directly opposite Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's house,
there is a striking fountain named after him. It is one of two cast-iron fountains that the city architect Coudray commissioned from the Günstersfeld foundry in Ilmenau. Standing on stone bases, the iron plates framing the fountain form an octagon, with a column rising from the rear part facing away from the Goethe house, from which the water flows into the fountain basin through the figure of a spouting dolphin. The plates and column are green in color.

In the middle of each iron plate is an image of a drinking snake surrounded by a wreath of leaves. The snake was considered a symbol of vitality, determination and perseverance. One of the plates has the number 1821 engraved on it,
the year in which the fountain was built.

The column bears the initials CA of Archduke Carl August and a crown, and on the back of the column is the year 1822, framed by a wreath of oak leaves.
The water-spouting dolphin is equipped with a trident.

The fountains were of great importance for the water supply of the Weimar population at that time. It was not until 1882-84 that the first pipe system was installed,
which also supplied private properties and households. Until then, citizens had to use the public fountains. They were therefore also meeting places.
As a letter from Goethe testifies, he watched the goings-on at the fountain in front of his house with keen interest.

Göthebrunnen not far from the Göthehaus on the busy market square.

The Gothe fountain, opposite Goethe's house, offers a very beautiful view while taking a rest on one of the benches.
