The Marstall is located right next to the Residenzschloss and in the vicinity of the Goethe and Schiller Archives. Farm buildings and horse stables have been located on this square since the 15th century.
In 1816, Duke Carl August commissioned the construction of a three-wing complex. But it was only his grandson, Grand Duke Carl Alexander, who continued construction in the Neo-Renaissance style until 1859. From 1873 to 1878 the complex was completed with the construction of a riding hall.
