The almost 100-year-old model house on the Horn is the only architecture that the Bauhaus in Weimar has put into practice. In 1923 it was built as a test house for the Bauhaus exhibition. Masters and students presented here for the first time how they imagined contemporary building and living. It was supposed to provide an answer to the housing shortage, with a modular, cost-effective construction, usage-oriented floor plan and living comfort through modern technology.

At the moment it can be visited again from the inside for € 4.50. It is worth it...

Haus Am Horn was built in 1923 as a test house for the first major Bauhaus exhibition. The design comes from Georg Muche, the youngest form master at the Bauhaus. The implementation planning was carried out in Walter Gropius' construction office under the direction of Adolf Meyer. The construction was preceded by generous plans for a Bauhaus estate with university and residential buildings by Walter Gropius and Fred Forbat. The Haus Am Horn is the first building that was erected in Weimar.

For the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, the house was extensively renovated and reconstructed in 1999 by the Friends of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar e.V., with the support of public donors and the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe. It was used in cooperation until July 2017 by the Friends of the University and the University itself as an exhibition house and event location. At the beginning of 2019, the property became the property of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. Since May 18, 2019, the house has been regularly open to visitors as a monument. A new permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of the building with the aim of conveying the creative and technological ideas.

From the Bauhaus Museum you can walk through the "classic" Weimar and then through the park up to the "Haus am Horn".

In the new building area behind the house there are many new buildings in the Bauhaus style. Great specimens included - highly recommended!
