The Sint-Trudoleken forms the confluence of a number of streams, including the Bergbeek, which originates on the higher grounds of Oedelem. Due to its low location and the inflow of a number of streams, the Meersen area was naturally a wet and swampy meadow area. Over the years, efforts have been made to make the area more suitable for agricultural use.
In 1937, the polder council constructed an artificial drainage system. The Hoofdsloot was dug as the main axis. It flows into the Ghent-Bruges canal through a drainage station. The Sint-Trudoledeken was diked and only ensures the passage of the water from Ryckevelde and Oedelem. It discharges its water into the Zuidervaartje and no longer absorbs water from the Meersen area.

This area south of Ver-Assebroek is a set of low-lying moist meadows and meadows surrounded by pollard willows and poplars. If you want to take a longer walk, you can combine the Assebroekse meersen with the Steenbrugse woods via the signposted Meersen hiking route of just under 7 kilometers. The Assebroekse meersen (82 hectares) also border on valuable landscapes such as the Beverhoutsveld, the Loweiden and the forests and heath relics of Ryckevelde. All possibilities, therefore, to make even longer walks.
